Miranda House , established in 1948 is considered as one of the premier institutions for women in the country.A residential college for women,Miranda house is one of the most popular colleges in North Campus with cut offs soaring high each year for all the courses.Being a proud Mirandian, I have compiled a list of well known alumni of Miranda House who have achieved excellence and success in their respective fields:

1) Sheila Dixit

She is a well known politician who served as the Chief Minister of Delhi from 1998-2013.She is a prominent member of the Indian National Congress.She led the Congress to three consecutive electoral victories in Delhi.She pursued her masters in history from Miranda house and today is one of the forerunners in the political scenario.

2) Mira Nair

One of the most famous alumni’s of Miranda House, Mira Nair is a world renowned Indian film-maker who is well known for making movies portraying Indian emotions and the Indian culture.A recipient of Padma Bhushan,she is famous for her movies like The Namesake,Salaam Bombay,Monsoon Wedding etc.Monsoon Wedding was awarded the Golden Lion award at the Venice film festival,making Nair the first female recipient of the Award.

3) Mallika Sherawat

Born Reema Lamba, she pursued Philosophy Honours from Miranda House. Mallika Sherawat made her debut in Bollywood with Murder which made her instantly famous because of the bold scenes in the movie. Known as controversies’ favourite child, Mallika is famous for her strong opinions and views and her sultry roles in movies.

4)Nandita Das

An unconventional actress and film maker,Nandita Das is well known for her brilliant performance in movies like Fire, Earth, Bawandar etc. She has received many national and international awards and has been on the Jury of the Cannes Film Festival twice. She received her bachelor’s degree in Geography from Miranda House and was the first Indian to be inducted into the International Women’s Forum’s Hall of Fame for her contribution to arts.

5)Anita Desai

Shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times,Anita Desai is a famous Indian novelist and short story writer.She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Literature from Miranda House and is a true inspiration to many budding novelists.She received the Sahitya Academy Award in 1978 for her novel “Fire on the mountain” and also won the British Guardian Prize for “The Village By The Sea”.
