“Goals are only important if they win games.”
– Lionel Messi

The call for the retirement was made after Messi failed to win a major title with the Argentinian team. The Copa America Final against Chile brought a billion hearts a stroke. The 29 year old missed a crucial penalty in the shootout and it is not clear whether the decision was made in the heat of the moment or with a thoughtful consideration.
One of history’s most celebrated Footballers, Messi is often compared to Diego Maradona and Pele yet his success does not match theirs on the international level.

It has always been very much debatable in Argentina, that who was the greatest player of all time, Maradona or Messi? With his decision to retire from international games, he shall further fall behind the former player Maradona.

One of the most skilled footballers of today, Messi with the Argentinian team won many major tournaments, World Cup 2014, Copa America 2007,2015,2016 to name a few and he became Argentina’s highest goal-scorer with 55 goals in 113 appearances.
Argentina will always wonder why was it not able to win any major title despite having one of the best players of all time. It was in 2001 that Messi moved to Barcelona when he was just 13, his adopted country Spain with the club that made him the legend he is today. The club has always loved him and he too made marvels with it yet failed to create such wonders with his national team, which is a fact that many “home” fans couldn’t digest.

Hundreds have tweeted to call the retirement quits. Messi’s agents have been avoiding the media ever since he has made the announcement. It is believed by some that the announcement was made only because of a shear emotional outbreak. And it is an obvious loss to the football fraternity if he sticks to his decision. However he is expected to return to Barcelona in Spain and it won’t be inappropriate to expect some brilliant matches at the club level.
